Default Prime Lens for Nikon D60

Hi,

This is my first post here but I hope to become more active in the near future.

I'm thinking about buying a 50mm Nikkor AF-S 1.4 G lens for my D60. I understand it's quite a bit more than the 1.8 alternative but I still want it, haha. Also the AF-S version seems more expensive than the 1.4D lens... but I learned that the D lens won't autofocus on my D60.

My question is this: If I buy the AF-S 1.4 G lens and eventually upgrade by camera body this lens will still work, right?

Also wondering if anyone had any specific feedback about using this lens with a D60.

Thank you

The lens will still work, yes.

Some people will recommend the AF-S 35mm f/1.8 DX, which WILL autofocus on your D60 and is completely compatible with all nikons. I prefer the 50 for several reasons (i like the length on DX) and i prefer the way the lens renders images (I find the 35/1.8 to be too "clinical" and it suffers from too much CA for my tastes)

Yes, AF-S will continue working on whatever Nikon bodies you might want. If you get the non-AF-S version, you'll be stuck manually focusing. While some people swear by manual focus, it's extremely difficult at wide apertures (like f/1.4), and really, having a lens that goes to f/1.4, why wouldn't you be shooting wide open a lot?

Have you considered the excellent (but much cheaper) 35mm f/1.8 AF-S? It's about half the price of the AF-S 1.4G, covers a more "normal" field of view, and has great quality by all accounts.

Edit: ninja'd!

Another option is a Sigma 30mm f/1.4 HSM which will autofocus on your camera. I picked up a lightly used one not long ago for $280 and am very pleased with it.
