Hey,
I currently have a 500D/T1i, with the 18-55 mm kit lens, 50mm/1.8 prime and 70-300mm zoom. I've been eying up the EF-S 17-55mm/2.8, and was wondering if anyone here had any experience with it. In particular, whether it's worth buying, since I have the kit lens to cover the range in good light, and the prime for low light. If I'm shooting indoors, then I prefer available light, so the 2,8 is very attractive. I would appreciate any thoughts thanks |

Yep, it's definitely worth buying. The lens is very good: it's razor sharp, good colours and the f/2.8 and IS combine wonderfully. Especially when you're indoors you'll want to be able to shoot around the normal 35mm. A 50mm lens is only "normal" on a full frame camera ;-)
You can see the photos I made with this lens by checking the lens:type=1755mmf28isusm tag on Flickr.

+1, worth every penny
only thing to consider is that the IS is more prone to failure. Other owners keep telling me to turn it off. I only do so doing tripod night shots heh

I'm not going to turn off an important feature on a 1000 euro lens, just because it may break. The front lens element can also break, should I keep the lens cap on just for safe measure? ;-)
The IS broke on my lens too. Fortunately it was still in the warranty period, so the fix was free. Yes, I've heard about breaking IS'es too, but so far I haven't heard about it breaking after the warranty had ended.

Are any of your flickr photos taken at f/2.8?
