I am looking to get a new L lens in the 24mm range, and I am currently looking at the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM Autofocus Lens, and also the Canon Zoom Wide Angle-Telephoto EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM Autofocus Lens they are comparable in price.
I have rented the 24-70 and get pretty good results but get an occasional shot with motion blur. The 25-105 has the IS but is an F4... is the tradeoff worth it? Does anyone have both of these lenses or experience with both, that can advise??

I've only got experience with my 24-105L, but I do have to say that if you're thinking of doing available light photography with moving subjects with the lens, you probably want the f/2.8 over the f/4 and IS. Because while IS can help you with the camera shake, it can't help you with subject motion blur. You're still going to be using slower shutter speeds. But if you're doing architecture and the like, the IS can come in very handy:
![]() Canon XT. EF 24-105 f/4L IS USM. iso 200, f/7.1, 1/8s. The 24-105 has more design compromises to cover the larger zoom range. If you need the extra reach, and you're planning on using the lens more as a walkaround/travel lens outside, the 24-105 is smaller and slightly more versatile, framing-wise. But the 24-70 is supposed to have better image quality, and the f/2.8 aperture gives it better available light capability. Also, speaking from personal experience, 24mm isn't all that wide on a crop body. The 24-105 and 24-70 are better matches for full frame. There's also a rumor going around that the much-speculated and wished-for 24-70 f/2.8L IS is going to be released, but, well... it's a called a rumor for a reason.

Thank you... that is exactly the kind of feedback I was looking for... and I am quite certain the 24-70 IS will come out exactly one week after I buy the non IS version
![]() I typically shoot human subjects and often in low light it seems so I will likely go with the 24-70 for the 2.8...as for reach, I am also getting the 70-200 2.8 IS lens also... Easter Bunny is being good to me this year :-) gorgeous shot by the way!
