Default Cleaning my tripod

I have a slik 500dx tripod (legs only) and unfortunately it has to be cleaned... major cleaning! I was at the beach and got stuck in the tide, so that means sand + salt water.

I've cleaned it as best I could however it's still not nearly good enough. I can hear the sand just rattling around in the legs. The legs on the other hand will hardly move, and when they do I'm afraid to do anything because I can already see the sand scratching the metal.

I would love to take this thing apart... however I cannot find any screws! Also, I bought some spray lubricant, but I really wanted to clean it before applying.

Any suggestions?

I was searching for "cleaning" and came across this post that is unanswered so I thought I'd take advantage of it & add a question of my own...

Can a tripod be in water without worry? My tripod is made of aluminium. I've read that saltwater isn't too much of a deal as long as its thouroughly rinsed in freshwater soon after (not that I know how to take the legs apart at the moment...).

Could I feel safe putting it into a foot of river water? If anyone have any firsthand knowledge how to go about both fresh & saltwater situations I'd appreciate the input.

Thanks alot.
