Default Filters?

Since UV filters are mainly to protect the lens, does it matter if I just buy the $20 pack from Wal-Mart (contains a UV filter, adapter rings and a polarizing filter) or does quality matter with those? They're Tamron. I think I saw that the quality of polarizing filters vary, so I assume the one in this pack is low quality, but I do want to get a nice one. How do I select a good polarizing filter? I know that polarizers cut reflections and brighten skies, etc., but will it also help cut the haze in landscape photos? Last summer I took shots from a high altitude and many of the photos looked hazy. Just wondering if a polarizer would help reduce the haze.

I'm going to the beach this summer. Are there any filters that work especially well with beach photos?

It still matters. Remember that youre putting another piece of glass in front of the lens. If that glass isnt great, then it's going to affect image quality.

ok. So aside from price, how do I know which ones are worth buying? I've browsed Amazon & ebay & found a variety, but I don't know how to tell quality from crap.

Thanks!
