Default 16-35mm 2.8 or 10-22mm

hey guys atm i have a canon 500d and i really want a very wide angle lense..im torn between the 16-35mm 2.8 and the10-22mm,

the pros for each are: i like the 16-35mm because it can fit on a full frame camera if i get one, one day.. its 2.8 and its L series.. but i heard that when you put this lense on a non full frame camera it acts like a 24-36mm and is not wide at all

: i like the 10-22 because its cheap and i can get it soon and that it is wide which i want. but it wont fit a full frame camera apparently which sucks and isnt L series and doesnt have 2.8

really not sure what to get.. if the 16-35mm does act like a 24mm on the widest then i guess im not interested ATM.. but i do want it because of the 2.8 L..please advice me on the best route i can take i want a wide angle lense..

thank you very much

If you want wide go for the 10-22.
Down the track, if you get a full frame camera, then keep your existing camera/lens as a backup/second camera.

The 10-22 holds good resale value. When you get the full-frame camera, time enough to sell it and get the 16-35L II. Consider the $100-$200 you'll lose on the price selling it used as your rental fee for the lens for the three-to-five years before you can afford a $3k full-frame camera.

Or. Consider the Tokina 11-16 f/2.8.

because of the cropped sensor in the 500 you need to multiple the quoted focal length by x1.6 on all your lens, so 16mm x 1.6 = 24mm (ish) , and the 10-22mm becomes 16mm at it's widest angle. I use a 10-22mm and a 17-40L, the 10-22mm feels cheaper than the very robust 17-40 but the image quality is excellent.

oh okay thanx.. but why is the 10mm becoming a 16mm.. because isnt it true that this lense doesnt work on a full frame camera such as 5D.. so if not then wouldnt it be 10mm on the 500d.. or they should have just labeled it as 16mm

The focal length always remains the same - it is part of the lens design. It is the field of view that changes with sensor size change.

Examples:
JimDoty.com - Digital Field of View Crop.

The 10-22mm refers to the minimum and maximum focal length of the lens, no matter the type of camera you would use it on. So if you have an APS-C (non full-frame) camera you should always keep in mind the crop factor ( 1.5 or 1.6 ). In your case it is 1.6

Ditto to what the guys above have said, but I also wanted to give you a huge thumbs-up for the 10-22. I have that lens and it is wonderful!

The 10-22 is also sharper than the 16-35, which is terrrrible.
