Default Lenses

I am looking for a lens that is comparible to the Canon 70-200 f2.8 IS Telephoto. Any suggestions? Something that Tamron or Sigma might make.

Thanks

Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 APO EX DG Macro HSM II - Canon Fit (579954) - Warehouse Express

I wouldn't say it was comparable, exactly, but it has the same range and aperture.. I don't think it has the IS, and if you're thinking about the Canon "L" series of lenses, then it definitely isn't as high quality...

Me, too. I want the same quality but at a lower price . I don't think that's possible. The Canon is a wonderful lens. The Sigma version is a lot more iffy. I've heard of a lot of people having issues getting a good copy. The Tamron version has some problems with autofocus. Not to say you couldn't get a good copy of either one, but you might have to send them back for new copies until you do.

There is a new Sigma APO 70-200 F2.8 EX DG OS coming out, but I don't know too much about it yet. Maybe the problems will be solved. It will have OS, similar to Canon's IS.

Personally, I don't own the Sigma or Tamron versions, just the Canon 70-200mm f/4 which I love. Just wish it was 2.8 and IS .

I bought a 70-200 f/2.8L (non-IS) from Adorama when they listed it in their used equipment store. Retail cost of the lens is around $1500 and used it cost $1000 shipped to my door.

For used lenses, Adorama has a 70-200 f/4L for $600 and the IS version for $1000. EP Levine shows the 70-200 f/4L for $579 and the 70-200 f/2.8L for $899.

If you're not shooting fast action in iffy light, the Canon 70-200 f/4L has very comparable image quality to the f/2.8. It's one stop slower, so you may have to bump your ISO up more often, and it can't get quite the same silky bokeh that you can get at f/3.2 and lower on the more expensive lens. But the non-IS version is also around $600, and it holds value pretty well for when you want to step up to the 2.8.

The f/4L is also considerably smaller and lighter, something you'll notice after walking around with the f/2.8L all day.
