Default Where to keep your gear?

I have decent travel bags but I'm wondering what some people do with their lenses and accessories at home? Seems odd to have them sitting in their bags.

Does anybody have some recommendations for storing their gear when it's at home?

The opposite is true - bags are the best place to have everything, so if an opportunity presents itself you can just grab the bags and run

I have mentioned on other posts that, because of the high humidity in Sydney (average in Feb 2010 was 88% ) I keep all of my gear in a dry cabinet.

High humidity environments are perfect for the growth of moulds on your gear, which is a pain to clean and requires lenses to be sent off for a professional clean inside

My Legend Wonderful dry cabinet had stopped any sign of mould growth - a great investment for my gear in my eyes and cost 1/2 of the cost of my annual insurance policy for all my gear.

That's fine for Sydney, but for the vast majority, leaving stuff in the bag and the bag in a cool dry place is fine. Just like almost everything else.

I keep a silica gel cartridge in my camera bag for high humidity.

I keep my gear in a pelican case. I throw that in the car and take only what I expect to use out in a vest/bag. I'll take a pelican case w/ me in a canoe or kayak as well. A 1510 will hold a decent amount of gear and also works well for air travel (carry-on legal).
Also works well for wet/humid environments as it's completely watertight...a couple silica bags will take care of anything that get's inside.....much more versatile than a dry cabinet.

well how long are you going to be away. personally i would keep mine in a camera bag in a dark closet, like i do now. i think about hiding my gear in different locations throughout the house too, that way if there's a robbery, my camera bag won't be packed and ready to take for those suckers. gotta get insurance.

how long before mold sets in. uh i hope i'm never gone that long. sounds too much like death.

This is what I do as well sorta. I put the gear into the proper bags and then the bags go into the pelican cases with some silica gel packs. Cases are sorted by type lighting gear, camera gear/lenses, grip gear, etc. For local shoots I just grab the bags out of the cases. when I am traveling with all the gear I check in the pelican cases with the bags and everything. Usually it is over weight however...

The pelican case is a great idea, never thought of it myself. I keep mine in the last bag I carried in a dark, dry closet. I repack every time anyway, so which bag doesn't matter much.
