I am about to get my first lens. I am deciding whether to get 24-70 2.8 or a 24-105 4is. i have read about the review of both this lens. i wanted to have more of a walkaround lens. although most of the review i have read about the 24--70 is used for wedding. does that mean its not a good walkaround lens? i am more into portrait and landscape photography. please help me with your inputs or review of the product. thanks.

For what camera? Crop or full frame?

I use the 24-105L as my walkaround on a 50D (crop-body), but it is long, and it's not good for available light with a moving subject, as they say above. The 24-105 looks better on a crop-body (corner performance not the best), but the focal length is actually a better fit on a full-frame.
The 24-105 is more of a 'jack of all trades' lens--it has more compromises (f/4, CA, distortion) to cover a larger zoom range in a smaller package. The 24-70 is the 'master' lens, with better IQ and available light capability, but it's larger/heavier, and has a smaller focal length range. Most folks consider the 24-105L to be the perfect travel lens with a full-frame camera. On a crop-body, the wide end isn't particularly wide. The EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM is the usual recommendation for crop bodies, if you want it all and are willing to pay four figures.

I use a Canon 24-105 on a 5D, and as inkista says it makes for a great combo.
I do own a 40D also and for that I feel it is not wide enough. I used to use a 17-85 and if I was buying a walk around lens, and not going full frame in the future, now I would be looking at the new Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM. It all depends on where you are walking around. Of the two you are looking at I would go for the 24-105 mainly because of the focal length range, weight, and IS.

That being said, whether IS or an extra stop of aperture is more important is something only you can decide.

The 24-105 is the "kit lens" for the 5D Mark II. That said, it is full of compromises, as has been mentioned earlier. I think this is true of any "kit lens".
The 24-70 costs $200 more than the 105, but it is a full stop faster. You lose some length on the zoom, yes, but you gain a much higher quality lens. If you decide to do more professional work, the 24-70 will serve you well in the long run. Images are sharper, brighter, have better contrast, and more vivid colors as compared to the 105. I really need to save the money to get one of these.
