Default Lens Hood for Canon 50mm f/1.8

Hey, I just bought a Canon 50mm f/1.8. I got it mainly for portraits and plan on doing a lot of outdoor portraits this summer. As such I was thinking a lens hood might be a good buy as they are so cheap.

My question is which type to go for?

The recommended ES-62:

Or this petal style:

What are the differences in the two?

Thanks for helping yet another newbie with yet another 50mm question.

The second one is a generic third party lens hood for different lenses (not just Canon). It may not, depending on its construction, let you use filters with the hood attached.

Some lenses rotate the front element when focusing or zooming. you will need the round type for these lenses.

Don't really see the point of a petal hood for a 50--particularly on a crop body. You want a petal hood if the lens is wide enough that the hood might impede the light coming in and cause vignetting at the corners.

thanks for the info guys. I did some more research and it seems the first style is indeed the way to go.

Imagine the perspective of the lens. On a 50 it's a fixed 'cone' extending out from the camera. With a zoom lens the cone can change diameter...exactly like the beam on a focusing flashlight... For a prime lens (1 focal length) there will always be one size of hood that that offers maximum protection without any vignetting of the image (the small rectangle in the middle of the circular image the lens projects) With a telephoto lens the hood can be long. With a wide angle lens the hood can't be that long or it will darken the corners. (vignetting) So the petal hood offers the longer telephoto hood on the 4 sides. (This part of the image circle is not in the frame so you never notice it) The corners need to be wider though. That's why the petal shaped hoods are shaped the way they are. At the wide setting of a matched lens the cutouts in the hood allow the corners to be fully exposed.

Hope that's clear as mud.

You're right you want the first one.
So in the future remember... the petal hoods are only for zooms... and looking cool.
The regular ones are for primes.

I'd get the one Canon makes for the lens.

Good call, the cheapo knockoffs are often made of an inferior plastic (breaks easily) and usually don't have threading on the inside for filters.
