Default 70-200 2.8... Tamron v. Sigma

So, I'm pretty set that I'd like to get a 70-200 2.8. However, I don't have two grand to drop on the Nikkor VR II.

Anyone have recommendations on the Sigma versus the Tamron?
Alternatively, I'd accept donations to make up the difference between these lenses and the Nikkor. :-P

Are you using a FX nikon body? if not you can get a great deal on the 70-200 f2.8 VR I. There are a lot of people selling theirs to upgrade to the VRII. I know I plan on upgrading to the VRII but already have someone that wants my VR I sorry.

Yeah I would save the money and get a VR I instead unless you are planning on moving to FX in the future. Anyways I have no personal experience with using the Tamron or Sigma so I can't say too much about those lenses but I have heard that there are issues of sharpness, color rendition, and soft focus with them.

I love my Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 VR, probably my favorite lens. I would get a used Nikon rather than the others. I have seen them as low as $1,400 recently. I don't know how the others compare at this focal length, but I had a Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 - it was ok --- BUT. I replaced it with a Nikon 24-70 f/2.8 and the Nikon was unbelieveably sharper.

Hey Adam,

did you end up getting either one?
I'm curious to know as I'm also interested in the Sigma 70-200mm f2.8

I have the Sigma 70-200 2.8 I am quite happy with it, and it is sharper than the Nikon 70-210 4-5.6 I had (not a fair comparison though). I have never had a 2.8 Nikon to compare it to, but I am happy with it. My decision was financially driven, as I could pick this up for $600 used versus $1200 used.
