Default lense for D5000

Hi, I am new to photography and just bought my Nikon D5000, and I would like to know which lense is good to take shots with nature like mountain, flowers, trees etc.that will good also with human images and sport. Do i need to have 2 separate lense to this?Is the Nikon 55-200mm VR fit with this because i found it not too expensive.I will appreciate your help and suggestions.....thanks

Welcome!

Honestly, I don't think there's a "perfect" lens out there that will do a great job on all the things you'd like to photograph. For example, anything that will take true close ups of flowers like won't serve you well with sports.

An 18-200mm lens might be a good, reasonable compromise, though I understand that -while versatile - these lenses tend to be a bit "soft" (meaning the details they produce aren't as sharp as you might get with other, less versatile lenses). But, if versatility is more important to you than sharpness, an 18-200 might be a great way to go.

All other lenses will each have drawbacks. The 55-200 is good, but not particularly long or wide. A 70-300 VR would be longer, but maybe not wide enough for some of your landscapes there in Switzerland.

Maybe start with the 55-200, use it for a while, then see if and how it limits what you're doing? Then, you'll have a better idea of what you need and can then make an informed next purchase.

My 2 cents. I'd be happy to hear what others have to say..

I highly recommend not buying a new lens yet. Play around with whatever you have (at least the 18-55 kit lens). Try to take the kinds of photos that you want to take. You'll probably find that it's surprisingly flexible. When -- and only when -- you start to feel limited, or unable to take the kind of photos you want -- then you should start looking at new lenses. Then you should be able to be more specific about what you want, and why.

Warning: do NOT confuse good composition with better equipment. Having certain lenses can allow you to take photos that are impossible otherwise (super telephoto lenses for birding, for example), but none of them will make a good photo for you.

So -- wait a while, learn about the equipment you already have, and focus on learning about the basics of composition, the "rules" of photography, how to use colors, shapes, light... and when you know a bit more about exactly what you want and why, you'll be much better prepared to ask your question.

If you already have the 18-55, then I agree with David.

I assumed (likely incorrectly) that you had just the camera body, but no lens yet.

Tamron 18-270mm is great all rounder..i use it on my D60.. great for travelling with just one lense on.. i simply love it. Just a tip with this lens you wont be able to use your pop up flash it creates a shadow.
