Default Macro (Close-Up) Filters

Being interested in macro photography, I decided to pick up a set of close-up filters in order to explore the area before putting down the big money for a lens. However, I can't seem to figure out how to use them properly.

Once I screw the filter onto my lens, my lens seems to lose all ability to autofocus (probably due to the distortion created by the close-up lens). If I take the filter off, I'm able to focus perfectly fine.

Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

Close up filters (diopters) work in a rather limited focal range which means you are going to move your camera in and out until you find the focal range for that particular diopter.Once you get into range your camera will have no problem taking over. It's a little bit of hit-and-miss that will make you appreciate that new macro lens just that much more.
