Default Tripod - Which one / What to look for

I suppose this is basic question. I need to buy a tripod for indoor and outdoor use. I would like to buy a decent one as it does not make sense to put a camera + lens that cost greater than $700 on a "it will do" tripod.

I would like to keep it under US $150. The camera I would be using would be an entry level DSLR. I would also like to maybe use it for video too.

What are some feature you like/find necessary about your tripod?

Any help that you can provide would be great.

TIA!

Whatever route you go, try to get one with interchangeable heads. Still photography and video have different needs. I use a ball head with my still camera since it allows me to do portrait and landscape positions, but a fluid head for video which is necessary for smooth panning.
