Hi,
I m a rookie on DSLR, I m getting a nikkor 50mm prime lens (52mm filter size) and looking into getting a UV filter as well. I have read that I should get large filter (77mm) with step-up ring, so I only need to buy 1 filter size for future lens. The question is, if I use a step-up ring will it get in the way on the lens cap? Cheers Jason |

A step-up ring goes on the front of your lens. So, if you leave the ring on the lens, it will require a bigger (77mm) lens cap. If you take the ring off, you can use your old lens cap.
I prefer to leave the ring on my lenses, and just buy a few extra caps.

It depends on the type of shooting you do and the budget you have, but I have resigned myself to the need to just buy a UV filter for each lens. When I'm switching out lenses while standing in a snowbank at -15C the last thing I want to be doing is trying to screw and unscrew filters with frozen fingers.
