Default $20 Tripod on eBay good for me? Please help!

I have a canon rebel t1i with 18-55mm lens & I will be purchasing 55-250mm lens soon. I want to know if this tripod is safe for my camera & lens.

NEW Sunpak TravelLite Digital Tripod 620-560BB - eBay (item 200437908028 end time Feb-16-10 08:00:16 PST)

It's light duty, but short of seeing it in person I don't see why it wouldn't work out. But, you know what they say, "caveat emptor"

I'm worried about it being too light that it will tip over once I put my camera on it. Maybe I should be aware ''/

I doubt it will tip over. It is light weight and for available light indoor it should be fine. A windy day outside, you may still see "camera shake" Just my 2 pennys worth!

NO!

According to B&H website it's rated to hold only 3.3lbs...That's barely suited for a large P&S like my G10... in calm wind.

A good rule of thumb is look for a rating aprox 2x the maximum weight you'll be putting on it if you want "stable".
I have a tripod "rated at 12kg (about 27#) which doesn't break when I mount my 16# rig on it, but it is in no way "stable" under that load.

the G10 is .9lb, making this 3.3lb-supporting tripod acceptable by your rule of thumb.

the T1i body weights in at 1.1lbs, with the kit lens being around .5lb.

1.6lb * 2 = 3.2lb, just right.

May I add I bought myself one for the gripped XTi, mostly because it had an extra quick-release, which I'm great at losing. For $20, it'd say it's worth trying it out.

I think it may also depend on how you plan to use the tripod. A small light tripod may not tip over, but it can still exhibit camera shake for longer exposures or in a wind or with a telephoto lens. I use a small Velbon with four-section legs for my panorama shooting because I need to be light and mobile and I'm often setting it up indoors with an 8mm fisheye, but I tend not to go below a 1/30s shutter speed, because I know that it's light enough to tremble. If I'm going to be doing much longer exposures, or using my 400mm prime, I go for my much more stable Manfrotto 055XB.
