Unhappy My poor lens

So I got invited to shoot a break-dancing competition, which was great fun. After the event was over me and a buddy were heading over to the car and I slip on some black ice and land on my camera bag. Of all the lenses, and all the gear in my bag the only thing that got damaged was my NEW 70-200/2.8 (the $2400 new one.)

The filter shattered completely, which got into the lens cap and when i got all the glass off the actual front glass element, I noticed some small scratches along the side.

What a bummer. I can't tell if its even effecting picture quality and I hope it doesn't cost a lot to get repaired.

Oh I have an image:

sorry to hear about this accident. Where did you buy the 2.8 model II? I am waiting to get one myself.

Without seeing a wider view, it's hard to tell the extent of the damage. Even if the font element is damaged, Nikon can replace just that element, at a substantial cost savings.

I bought it from a local camera store called Photocraft (PhotoCraft, ePhotoCraft - Your anything and everything in Photography! Family Owned Since 1978)

It's just this part that is scratched, nothing else. I'm going to take it to a camera store today to see how much it would cost to get repaired.

It's just scratches to the anti glare paint on the metal...Shouldn't affect anything, but if it does use a black sharpie pen the scratches out.

These situations are why I have my stuff insured. That and I've gone wading and rock climbing with my gear. I plan on taking my gear Kayaking this year...

It's on the glass itself, not the barrel. I took it into Penn Camera to see what they thought and the guy took a picture with it and looked at it on the computer and said it wasn't effecting the picture whatsoever. He also said if I did want to get it repaired it would be $200+... Needless to say I just bought a new filter and plan on seeing how it works out.

Scratches on the front element, especially off to the side, arent usually a problem. I remember LensRentals showing a picture taken with a lens a while back. The shot was definitely soft and was prone to flare, but it wasnt THAT bad. A second shot of the front element revealed that it had been hit directly in it's centre and the entire front element had spiderwebbed out with HUGE cracks.
