Default Tamron 18-270mm 3-5-6-3 Lens?

Any one have this lens? Thoughts? I'm thinking it might be a good all-purpose lens for my trip to Costa Rica.

While I have not used it, the almost universal opinion on it (which again, are based only on reading, not on my experience) is:

- Amazingly long range, very nice for that.
- Very poor construction and build quality.
- Tremendous amounts of distortion.
- Poor optics.

Basically, it's among the worst of the superzooms.

The dpreview review will have actual test data that you can compare directly side-by-side with the Canon and Sigma 18-200s on a 1.6x crop body. Generally superzooms are about convenience, not so much image quality.

I know i'm a little late for this, but i own this lens and I live in Costa Rica.

I love it to short trips due to 3 factors:
1) Weight - you don't have to carry 2 o 3 lens, but of course that comes with a price of quality.
2) Range - from Wide to Long is awesome I love to take photos of landscapes and small details. Nice IS (VC on Tamron nomenclature)
3) Macro - Well if you come down here you need a macro to shot flowers, insects, small details or textures. This where this one comes in handy.

I have to admit 1 thing, I'm always, but always criticizing the quality of the image this lens generates. I would describe this lens as average-good lens for most of things, but it's not excellent for anything... in other words it will never replace your wide angle or your all-around f/2.8 or f/4 lens or your macro, but it will do the job if needed

Check my site, I usually tag photos by the lens I used, so it will give you a nice idea.
