Default uneasy nostalgia

hallo

ive always loved takin pictures but its only know that im tryin to really learn takings pics; sadly all i can afford now is a point and shoot cam with basic manual functions

took this after getting my cam out of the box and then tweaked it a bit using microsoft pic manager. i know its quite grainy but to me, its somehow adds a bit of nostalgic take to it

Hi amhuirnin,

Welcome to DPS. I'm new here myself, just over a month, but it's a great place to improve your photography. I've learned a ton.

This is a nice image. I really like the feeling that you've captured. I get a strong sense of the bond between the subjects in the photo.

The noise (grain) of the image is nice. It helps add to the mood of the image. The bottom white part doesn't really add much, so I think that you can crop it out if you want to.

For me, what keeps me from really engaging with the image, is the lack of focus. I like soft images because they are great at conveying warmth, but I really wish that the boy's face was in focus. He has a great smile and I would like to see it more clearly.

I hope that helps you

KG

I can add little new to the comments of KG, who did an excellent critique. But I will echo them. The grain in this soft-focus candid does not detract from the warmth that I feel on looking at this happy child with a relaxed relative behind him. You can feel the strong connection between these two. I would consider cropping the white area at the bottom as it distracts from the main focus, the child. Look for an opportunity to photograph them by window light and it will give a different feel.
