I originally posted this is the share your shots thread but meant to put it here as I'm looking for some C&C...

My fiancee's engagement ring. I started out shooting this in aperture priority mode, but for the DOF I was looking for, the lighting was just too poor. I then switched over to shutter priority (using a tripod of course) and finally achieved the perspective and DOF I envisioned. Once I transferred the shot to my computer, I just couldn't get the white balance/temperature where I thought "this is it." Being that color wasn't important here, I decided to convert the image to black and white, up the contrast slightly, and deepen the blacks a little. I think the black and white adds to the elegance of the ring. Sorry for being so long winded, please any and all criticism is welcome!

You should include exif data... And more specific question.
As it is, I would say that letters distract me from the ring... Don't know if it helps.

Good try at creating something by yourself (the quotation and the ring). But here, I dont see the point of the ring against that message. I think the ring and the message dont go hand in hand. Removing the ring would be better here. If you really want to use the ring then how about finding some message about love, marriage, bond, and so on?

I find the words are the primary subject of this photo and the ring I only noticed afterwards.
I am not sure how to set the ring off more, though.

I agree, the ring is lost among the large words. The only fix I can think of is to hold the ring at the bottom outside the frame and get a close up of the ring with the words in the background. I'm don't have the skills to suggest camera settings tho.

I like the the concept and tone, it just needs to be re-prioritised; I didn't even notice the ring when I first saw the photo. I would suggest using writing smaller, on a smaller piece of paper so that the ring looks bigger in comparion (cheaper than getting a bigger ring!!). Then you could leave a space in the middle for the ring.

Alternatively, you might want to place the ring on the flap of the envelope, then place it at the thirds intersection, possibly with some vignetting

Try shooting it in the box against a solid color. This is what I did with my wife's ring.
