Welcome to DPS.

The easiest place to start with improving this shot is the contrast. It's very gray overall - generally you want a pure white and a pure black at some point in every black and white picture. If you need help with how to get that just let me know, I'd be happy to give more detailed advice on it.

As for other critique (and please don't take this harshly) but, yes, it's a hand. Why is it interesting? The way this is presented I can't see any defining characteristics of the hand, and the posture isn't interesting or abnormal. Give me something to look at!

I'm curious what "old" is to you. It doesn't look like an old person's hand and maybe it is the over processed look that is taking away the aged look. If you know this person, then you'll be able to work on this photo again and watch your own progress as you learn to improve the shot. Keep at it.
