Default Antique Brass Lock

This picture was taken at Watkins Woolen Mill State Historical Site located in Lawson, Mo. The antique brass lock was attached to the door of the icehouse on the grounds. I think the photo is striking with the sunlight filtering across the lock. My question to you is...Do you think the background is too dark? What could I have done or can do to make the photograph pop?

Camera: Nikon D60
Exposure: 0.017 sec (1/60)
Aperture: f/5.6
Focal Length: 44 mm
ISO Speed: 200
Exposure Bias: -1/3 EV
Flash: No Flash

Thank you in advance!

Also try adding a vingette around the lock. Yes, it will make the border around it darker but that will also bring more attention to the lock.
Clarify or add some selective cintrast to the lock, make it really POP out at you!

I modified the photograph as you suggested...both contrast to the lock and vignette. Can I get your input on the update?

Much better! Now lets take it one step further. Notice all the empty space on either side? have you considered a square crop to get rid of it?

cool.. a very interesting pic.. love the details and colors. The cropped version is better..The pic kind of hazed, but it looks nice.

Thanks Walism, I see what you mean. I think it might look hazy due to my adding the vignette around the lock and I didn't make it wide enough. I've removed the vignette and contrasted the picture. Thanks for your input. I checked out your pics on Flicker and I think you have a good-eye!
