Default Golden Fall (Plant Portrait Style Photo)

Hey everybody. This is my first post so I hope I do everything right. I am trying to get more serious with my photography and was looking to hear some critique on this shot. Really I just want to see what people think of the overall composition of the shot and if it seems to flow properly. Thanks.

Taken with a Canon 40D, f/5, 1/1000 sec, ISO 400, and 40mm

First, welcome to DPS! You've done well -- specific questions, EXIF data, etc.

Now, on to your questions. I like the composition, in terms of the overall idea. The grasses blowing in the wind do feel like they're sort of moving through the frame. The gold contrasts nicely with the sky.

The main thing which bothers me is the focus: it looks like the stems in front are in focus, but none of the tassels (the bits at the top of the grass) are in focus. Those are the most interesting parts, in my opinion, so I'd like to see one of the central tassels in focus.

Also, any reason why you were at ISO 400? You seemed to have plenty of light. I don't see any noise, but in general it good to know why you chose the exposure that you did.

Very nicely done!
My eye wants to follow the reed on the top right but the focal point of the shot is the bare one in the center. At the top right it gets a little soft, making it hard to determine which one is in front. Given the opportunity, I'd re-focus on the upper right of the scene. Everything else looks great

Hey thanks for the comments, I really appreciate any feed back I can get. The ISO, I think that it just brought out the blue a little better for some reason. This picture was taken just before sun down, but the ISO I usually just keep on Auto, especially when shooting in Av mode (usually what im set on to begin with). I might have to go back to this area of town and retake the photo and see if I can change the focus for the better. Thanks again for the suggestions and the comments. It is the only way I can get better!

Nice photo, and welcome to DPS!

In addition to the comments above, I would humbly suggest putting your photos on a photo sharing site such as Flickr. When you attach pictures to your threads here on DPS, the photos do not look as good.

Just a thought.
