Default Blue Woman

Hey Everyone,

My first official post so I figured I should get a photo critiqued. Just starting to get into photography which is surprising considering my father is a professional photographer. I'm capable of taking criticism, both construction/negative so don't be shy because its my first post. I had three shots that I was looking at putting up, but I read the rules and choose this one because it is the most striking one in terms of colour and subject.

This shot was taken during my trip to Toronto to visit a friend. I'm a 4th year history major and have a fond attraction to museums and anything historical.

I know the photo is quite grainy, I believe the term is having "noise", correct me if im wrong.

EXIF: (don't know what that is..lol, inform me)
Camera: Canon Powershot (I know, i've actually inherited my father's first big digital - Canon Rebel EOS, excited to use it. I know its older, but oh well)

I'm not looking for anything specific, just trying to see what people think of it, I haven't had any formal training in photography, which is a shame given its importance in my family but I love it and i'm happy when taking photos.

Cheers!

EXIF is the information embedded in the file by the camera. That's how Flickr knows all your settings!

As far as critique goes, I think the graininess of the result works well - it adds some interest to what would otherwise be pretty flat colours. However, I am left wondering why you chose to chop off the near foot and if a slight shift of perspective might have brought that into frame and made better use of the bold lines available in the scene? It works but I wonder if it could have worked even better!

I defintely agree with your assesment. I can only chaulk it up too the fact that when I was taking this photo it was more for just me. I wasn't thinking of composition, I just liked the contrast of the Blue/Yellow and the retro fan shapes in the background. Like you mention, I think a slight change of perspective and composition would have created a better shot.

I find the background distracting as the symmetrical lines could also be the focul point and conflict with your subject matter.

Mask layer
Changed the background

Of course this could have been achieved much easier by shooting the subject from a different angle.

I like the lines... but not that security rail. However, moving it would probably have been a quick way to get slung out!

I too like the lines, but I see where you're coming from by saying they are distracting.

As far as the security rail...I should have anyways since it was my last shot of the day and I left right after. Oh well knowledge for next time.
