I think this is a nice photo.
I haven't had a clear night yet with a moon available for shooting - can't wait until I do!

Yer, it wasnt as clear as i wanted anyway, i sat in the cold for ages with the tripod waiting for some clouds to pass.. I had to use live view to get focus and had to magnify the preview to ensure focus, which on the kit lens was like a twitch in the wrong direction and it was a blur.
I was surprised at the fact that i didnt really need a long exposure ![]() I really wanted to get closer, but i dont know how without sacrificing the quality any further.

It looks good to me. I like the way you shot the waning crescent. I've some photos of the moon and you're right, it's not east to focus on. Nice use of placement after the cropping.
Here's my first attempt. Fuzzy, I know.

Hey, what a coincidence! I made my first attempts at shooting the moon recently with my 55-250mm as well! I used the same process as above re: zooming in using Live View and setting focus that way. I wish I'd closed my aperture a bit more than I did (yours is very sharp!), but I wanted to keep my shutter speed relatively high as I could actually see the moon moving across screen.
Here are a couple that I'm happy with: ![]() ![]() I blogged about my experience as well ![]() The 2nd pic was taken the night Nasa plew up a rocket on the moon's surface. Unfortunately I was about an hour early

Here are a few of my first moon attempts. i know it can use improvement, but it took me awhile just to accomplish these. i just happened to look in my review mirror and seen the sun setting, there is no touch ups on it. i like how it turned out. the moon pics i touched up just a little i picassa.
the moons both had the same settings. focal lenth: 300 apeture: f/5.6 iso: 200 Picasa Web Albums - tiffanylalbritton - Moon |

Great idea with the sepia toning on the first one - you've inspired me to re-visit mine! 1/20 sec is a bit long for this type of shot though, the highlights are completely blown out. I'd either close down your aperture a bit or increase your shutter speed. The 2nd one almost has a "newspaper" B&W effect, a little noisy but much closer! The focus seems sharper. Keep trying! I've been out 4-5 nights now and I'm still trying to figure out the best settings. I wish I had access to a telescope! |
