It looks blurry or out of focus. I can't tell if its camera shake or focus or lens softness but I don't really see any details in the moon. It looks very underexposed also. I would like to see the moon near the top end of the histogram without overexposing it and losing details. Try spot metering right on the moon itself, then push your exposure compensation up 1/3 to 2/3 stops.

here's one that i took recently with tamron 70-300mm

Model: PENTAX K20D
ISO: 640
Exposure: 1/8 sec
Aperture: 8.0
Focal Length: 300mm
Flash Used: No

WOW NICE! My lens didn't even bring it in that close. I've wondered if something was wrong with my camera body now i'm wondering again....or maybe the lens. I totally hate my Tamron lenses. Then again, it could be the fact that the camera, Nikon D50 is only 6.1 megapixels

Stop down to f/8 or f/11. That should help increase the sharpness of the lens. You can also try backing just a hair off from 300mm as well.

Your shutter speed's waaaay too slow if you're handholding and not using a tripod. You need to get the shutter speed up to 1/focal_length or faster. @300mm, that means 1/300s or faster if you're handholding.

half moon
Canon 50D, EF 400mm f/5.6L USM, iso 400, f/5.6, 1/400s. handheld.

Also, post-processing plays a role, too. My shot was cropped, and had noise reduction and sharpening applied. Weird, I just took this ten minutes ago, and then I see this thread...

just a question but why did you get a 18-105 and an 18-200? wouldnt it have made more sense to go either with just the 18-200 or like the 18-105 and then like a 70 or 80 to a 200 or 300?

Yea that's what I was originally gonna do, get just the 18-200. However, my friend here has the Nikon D60 and want's the 18-105 kit lens and said this: "man get that 18-105 that comes with it and i'll give you $300 for it right now." So I did and used that money to go ahead and get the SB600 Flash for $250. I wanted the 18-200 VR Lens and I already have the 50mm lens. With the 18-200 I can keep it mounted when shooting without having the need to ever change unless i'm shooting with somthing particular in mind. Do you have another suggestion? I'm always open to new ideas, that's the way you learn right?
