Default painted pregnant belly

Did this for a page in a local March of Dimes fundraiser calender. CC on lighting and contrast, or anything else that I should have done differently. Are the background and clothing too dark?

March of Dimes_2009 09 14_0042

EXIF:
Camera: Nikon D50
Exposure: 0.001 sec (1/800)
Aperture: f/5.0
Focal Length: 38 mm
Exposure: +0.65
ISO Speed: 1600
Exposure Bias: 0 EV
Flash: No Flash

Taken with 2 soft boxes on either side of the subject, so no camera flash. Slight crop, adjusted for exposure, lighting, etc. Selected background and subject's clothing and darkened them using a level's adjustment.

Thanks,
Anne

Default In my opinion...

I do think the clothing and background are too dark. You cannot tell where one stops and the other begins, which makes the belly appear to be floating and disconnected from the body, and looks odd at the top of her belly, like a bad mask job. In addition, where the hand touches her back is also quite dark it appears to be touching nothing.

Can you bring some of that detail back in her clothing? I'd like to see how you work it out.

The shirt looks like you took a brush and painted it on, there are no shadows or anything to say what it is. I agree it looks like a floating belly.
