Default Fairies in the light

I took this picture of my daughter and my niece, sadly I did not know how to get the correct exposure, I hope I am putting this in the right place, how should I have taken this picture, aside from not in front of a window or is there no hope when taking a shot like this in front of a bright window?

Exposure: 0.008 sec (1/125)
Aperture: f/5.6
Focal Length: 50 mm

What kind of camera did you use?

What shooting mode was the camera set to?

Do you have an external hot shoe flash?

Manual, Nikon D80 and no other flash. If I did have a flash what would I have done differently?

Personally, I love the photo. But then again, I love bright images that tend to be overexposed...which is a personal preference. And I think it suits the subject matter, with the bright background and heavenly little fairies. I can't give any technical advice since I don't know much about bright windows and flashes, but I can tell you I like the overexposed-ness of the image!
