Default Cupcake

There's something wrong about this picture. I just can't put my finger on it...

Nancy's Cupcake

Is it the composition? is it the colouring? ahhh any insight? i'm very open to criticism and just want to improve; I promise I won't get angry!

I think the large shadow is the problem. I think you need more light? And the cake needs a cherry (or something) on top.

Is the surface the cupcake is sitting on supposed to be white?

Is this supposed to be a product shot?

Lakito is right... just a teeny splash of color could help the picture out a whole lot...

I like this a little better.

I should crop a little off the right side but you get the idea.

I agree; needs a splash of color and more exposure.

I would have preferred (warning: I'm a newb):
  • Brighter/white background
  • No shadow
  • More flattering part of the cupcake facing the camera

Thanks for the input, I never really thought of the shadow being part of the mess. Though I'm just a beginner. I just gotta remember to look at it in the big picture. This is not a product shot, my friend made a cupcake and i thought it was nice of her to send one my way. so I just shot it. the counter is actually like a greyish colour. thanks for all the input. I think i just need to have saw that before hand to take it so the shadow is is not facing me. I think thats what made it the most awkward. most photos don't have a subject's shadow going toward the camera. and yeah colour, i probably should have prepped it a little better. thanks again, all the input was very helpful!

Smile Light source direction...

Well if I am having this shot, I'd rather change either my shooting direction or the light source direction to get the shadows to be on the other side of my view.

This will enable to have my view well lighted... and have the shadows on the other side giving depth to the photo...

Why don't you try this out and let us see the output...

All the best.
