Default Night Iris

Iris

Personally I love this shot,as It fits a mood i was trying to convey. I have it on a score me Flickr group and got bad rattings on exposure. So i wanted to come home for some true critique on it as I feel DPS has always give the best critiques around.

I'm very new here, but FWI I think it's wonderful. Evokes a mood very nicely.

Struggled with what exactly to say about this. According to usual standards it's underexposed, but as you're dealing with a white subject against a dark background, that was probably necessary, and you do seem to have retained detail in the flower. That said, I could still take the picture and, using the levels tool, take the white point down to around 200 - gave much more contrast and still retained detail in the flower. That's probably why the scorers gave you bad ratings on exposure. I'm assuming you were trying for a darker mood, but it is a little too dark still, imo. Also I don't think the centered composition works very well here.

You did do a very, very good job lighting it though. The shadows on the petals are just right.

I love the idea of the photo at night. I like the lighting on the flower. The detail on the lower petals is really good. The other petals don't have that same detail and I think it would be a better photo if they did. I feel the 3 little pink flowers on the right are distracting from the subject as well as the deadish looking area at the bottom of the photo (but that could be cloned out easily enough if you wanted). All in all I really like this photo as well. The Iris is one of my favorite flowers.

Love the feedback! I don't mind a little criticism but I don't like it when I'm not told why one don't like a shot.. Thanks so much
