Greeting DPS
While trying to set up for some humming bird shots off my porch I noticed some spots on the vase. Returning with a something to clean with I found this little moth. ![]() I had little time to shoot before he left. I now know to clean props before setting up, set camera to continuous shooting, keep the camera level, the lens may not be the best for this job but it is the best I got (love it) and always be on the ready! Is the focus on the moth too soft? What would have been the best way to focus this shot? Would a larger DoF helped with the focus of the vase and the moth? Is it just camera skill? Thanks Tony Link to Moth resting on Lenox http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3134/...618e57be_o.jpg Camera: Canon EOS Digital Rebel XSi Exposure: 0.006 sec (1/160) Aperture: f/2.5 Focal Length: 85 mm ISO Speed: 200 Exposure Bias: 0 EV Flash: Flash did not fire

Hi benton432:
I like what you tried to do. The overall felling on the image is that there is not anything is focus. The blurred background is beautiful yet there is not foreground clear. I see you used an aperture of f/2.5 and went to burst mode. For my experience (and it's not that huge experience) when I shout this kind of animals that are in constant move, I always shot in manual and single shot. I know there move a lot, but I prefer rather to get 1 shot that it's useful than 20 that are not. As for your question, about the DOF, I would try to go for an aperture like f/8 or something like that, where the sharpest focus, can be obtained. Every lens is different, but you can try to find your hot spot. The exposure is good for me. You kept the detail on flower's petals and you did not blow out the white colors, so in that case you did a good job. In conclusion, forget all my words, lol...just try manual focus next time and see what you get! =) Thanks for sharing it!
