Default Auto With No Lights?

What in the exif or the physical setting would indicates the reason this is dark? Not high enough iso -tho 400 would seem to be enough-nor did the flash fire.
btw: this was surely a "shoot from the hip" perpetration

completely depends on the lighting. You can take a 30-minute exposure at 3200 ISO with a wide-open aperture, but if you're shooting in a dark room with absolutely no light sources or leaks with the lenscap on, you'll get a (mostly) black image.

As a side note, you may want to look into metering options - I personally use spot metering so I can have tight control over the exposure. Anyhoo, I don't see this image as very dark - it actually has very bright spots that are very near being blown out, and the only detail possibly lost to darkness seems to perhaps be in the leftside person's hair.

Edit: Just checked the histogram on this one - you do have some data lost on the bright end, and almost nothing lost on the dark end. Values are pretty evenly spread within the range you've captured though:

i'm not exactly sure what you are asking and if i err.....my apologies....

your scene is well exposed to my eye......but, yes, your models are both underexposed....if that is what you mean, then my assumption would be it is because the woman is not only standing in the shadow as your man is, but has dark skin, black hair, and wearing dark clothing.....all of which would contrast with the larger, brighter areas of the frame and your camera exposed for the whole scene....

again, excuse my ignorance if i am wrong.....

Many thanx to you both! No errs at all.
1. Spot metering may be the way to go; because of the contrasting scene - my camera just did the best it could, I think? *I need a new pc monitor too.
2.Yes the trade off is/was: blown out high lights or slightly shaded mid tones-darks, it seems
3. I didn't mention I used a ef 28-90 bottom of the barrel lens, sorry. I do suppose that a little higher quality lens would've helped a little too.
I do have a 50mm 1:1.8 but I love to play with the little sneaky zoom I get from the 28-90...I just gotta walk closer, be a man and ask for shots NOT!-LOL Thank you guys again

I tota;ly get "sneaking pictures" In my head, I am saying, do you mind if I take your photo, but nothing comes out of my mouth AND then I just snap w/o flash (so they really have no idea) and then scurry away - I guess I need to "man-up" also...lol

and I swear; I only got one "NO!" since I've been into this, (@ 3 1/2 months) but fear of that "No" is the reason I just ordered a little cheap 2x. telephoto extension-lol LMbO

I usually would just take the shot and then ask for a release afterwards. That way you don't get the shot that potentially looks posed or forced, and you don't live with the bad karma of taking a shot of somebody without at least letting them know. That, and now you may have a release that frees you up to use the image (almost) however you want.

If they say no, I just walk away without a release.

Major-Small: Now that's the honorable thing to do.
But the kind of candid shots I want(Often) is when people are out of sorts, like; having a bad day or laughing so hard that their distorted or falling asleep or falling down etc.
But the novelty should wear off in a few months, I guess when I value my skills a little more?
