The instrument is beautiful but is lost on all this wall. It would be a stronger composition to get closer and shoot only a portion of the instrument rather than the entire piece.
For example you can take a shot of the scroll and pegbox at an angle with the camera set on a tripod and just slightly above the subject. Use diffused sidelight from a window, with a white reflector opposite so the shadows will be lighter keeping more detail. And FILL the frame with your subject. Experiment with different apertures to get the right depth of field, a good starting point is f/8.

Better, you get the idea. Kristy's observation is quite good.
Even this small portion of the instrument is highly recognizable to most people as a violin; many times taking a closer crop of a recognizable part is a stronger composition than taking a picture of the whole thing. Good job, keep looking for better angles, I would say with such a beautiful violin you have a good two weeks worth of images to explore.

i like your second image.....ambient light has made honey of your wood.....pleasant and warm.....
if you want an image with your entire instrument i would suggest finding a more suitable background.....draped fabric, a long piece of posterboard, anything that would give a more uniform appearence to showcase your piece..... i am also be inclined to say to watch your lighting and the shadows and highlights it casts....maybe draping your lightsources with a diffusing material.....if you shot the first image with the light of the second i believe you'd be happier..... nice choice of subject..... peeper |
