Default Road sign

A wooden road sign on the countryside

Sign

There's this little thingy on the left side of the sign... would I be better off removing it?

EDIT:
Oh, yes, the EXIF:
Camera: Canon EOS 400D Digital
Exposure: 1/4000 sec
Aperture: f/2.2
Focal Length: 50 mm
ISO Speed: 100

It looks like there is a dark halo around the top part of the sign. Too much sharpening, perhaps?
