I need some advice as to how to elimate the shadow. I had a Nikon speedlight SB 600 flash attached to my D 70.

I guess you didn't bounce the flash form, for example, ceiling or a wall, but used direct flash instead. That's what caused the shadow.

bounce the flash or use a diffuser on it would be my only suggestion.

if it was a staged shot then i'd tell the groom to move his thumb down a bit. otherwise i like the composition.

Nice composition overall. As others stated this is caused by the direct flash used. Since you have an off-camera flash unit you have several choices. One is to attach a diffuser such as the Sto-Fen Omni-Bounce or to use the swivel function of your flash unit and point the flash straight up if you have a white ceiling less than 10 feet from which to bounce the light.

You can also get a flash backet for your camera to get the flash away from the center and give a slight directional light. Better yet, hold the flash with your hand to either side and slightly above your subjects eye level for more directional and flattering lighting.
