Default Scanner Photography

I have been reading about a scanner photographer (scans things on a scanner) named Robert Creamer. His work looks nice. He says that scanning flowers is not very easy, and it takes time to find a good composition.

Anyways, I tried to do some scanner photography. Here is my take:

It's not as good as Creamer's (duh), but I think it turned out pretty well. Is there any way to improve besides using some more contrast (too red now)? Also, these flowers were really small (only about 1.5 inches long). Do you think I would be better off using larger ones?

Info:
Scanner: HP PSC 1401 All in one
7px gaussian blur added in GIMP
Saturation upped in GIMP

Thanks!

All I did was do a 'auto' adjust, in picasa, simple edit. haha.
not sure what it does, just simple lighting, shadowing and lower saturation.

this shows a bit more color in there, other than the red.
