Default Zoomed while using Auto Focus - Gnome

I was talking with my neighbor and he mentioned a photograph where someone took a picture while zooming on the subject.

I, relearning what I used to know about photography, decided to give it a try and this is what I ended up with. I'd say that it was a lucky shot but, never the less, I did it.

Please let me know what you think about this photo and let me know what I could of done to make it better.

Camera: FujiFilm FinePix S2950
F-Stop: f/5.6
Exposure Time: 1/160 Second
ISO Speed: 200
Focal Length: 90 mm
Max Aperture: 3.26
Metering Mode: Pattern
Brightness: 6.29 (White Balance was on Auto)

Thanks,

Oz

Neat trick, I like the effect. If you stare at it, the gnome looks a little murderous. With that said, it looks like only the gnome's faces is in focus. I don't know if there is any way to combat only the center of the image being in focus. Maybe this only works for smaller subjects.

Next time try using some fill flash, maybe rear curtain so that the face is a little more sharp but you still get the blur around the edges....

I'm not too keen on the zoom while shooting stuff. I'm gonna have to give it a try sometime.

When I think about it, I do like the killer gnome idea though. It does look a bit sinister.

I liked this effect... Never tried a shot with zooming after AF... Looks a cool effect for, eg, mind games, when you want to give a effect on a photo for a game of chess. (It worked in my mind now).

I kind of like the effect, although I think it gave me a bit of a headache. For a crisper image, you might want to try that with a tripod.
