Default White Roses

roses by Cheau Me, on Flickr

Really interested in your thoughts and criticisms. Thanks!

This was a spur-of-the-moment shot. I have no studio. I sat the vase on a chair draped with roll paper. I put a string of Christmas lights behind the paper and dimmed the lights in the room so the light from behind the paper would show.

These are roses from my daughter's wedding. She will like the photo no matter what, but to me, just white roses are not interesting. My main goal was to get a nice shot of roses for her, but my secondary goal was to make it slightly more interesting with some color in the background.

I kinda like it, but . . . I don't know. Something about it doesn't make me completely happy with the shot, but I can't put my finger on it. Is it that they're a little dark? I don't know.

What do you think? Don't worry about my feelings.

It looks like the lights are bright enough to have fooled your camera into underexposing most of the scene. You might be able to fix this in post or you might need to add some light to the flowers and reshoot.

In general, very light-colored scenes (backlit white paper and white flowers, for instance) and very dark-colored scenes need exposure compensation for an auto-exposed photo to be rendered properly.

I think the white in the flowers needs to stand out more. I think maybe a dark background color may have made it stand out slightly more.

Thanks for the feedback. It's too late to try it with these flowers, but I will try again.

Use could use some editing software and just make the white roses lighter/whiter -- I think it would look very nice ...
