Hi! this is one of the first few shots i have taken at my attempt at photography. I can't afford to buy a DSLR so this is taken using a point and shoot digital camera. Comments of all sorts will be highly appreciated

Hi
As this your first shots then if okay i’ll do my first critique. Nice shot, i like the depth of field, textures and the way you have used the light. You might want try to crop it slightly tighter In my opinion the eyes draw to the nail in the second post, either use the rule of thirds or the golden ratio to get that where the lines cross Basically do some research on ‘composition’ ‘rule of thirds’ ‘the golden ratio’ Try cropping it a few times and post the best one that you feel is composed the best I hope this helps Thanks Steve Please feel free to comments about this critique. |

Nice subject and basic composition. Good use of depth of field.
For my tastes, though, the lack of color isn't really a bonus. I'd suggest converting it to B&W and see what you get. Technically, there's some weird C/A (sort of blue glow around the blown highlights), and I think some form of distortion (note how the posts aren't strictly parallel in the shot. They're straight/vertical on the left side of the frame, but start to lean to the right by the right side of the frame, so I get a kind of "falling" feeling. If that's what you're going for: great. If not, maybe a different angle of attack would have worked). The highlights on the left edge of the image are blown. The histogram might help you here, when you're shooting. Don't worry about using a P&S camera. Trust us when we say it's not the camera, it's how well you use it. Just don't forget that you can post-process an image from a P&S camera, just as you can one from a dSLR. Even if you don't have RAW capability, you still have some leeway to mess with the image.

nice shot! I agree with what the others have said about not worrying so much about what camera you use... whatever lets you take pictures, right?
What I like about your picture is that you chose to shoot the line of posts on a diagonal and with macro mode on, to lead the eye through the picture. My personal thoughts on this is like the others-- it needs a bit of color to add interest. Also my eye keeps sort of looking for what the subject of the photo is. For example, what if the first post in focus had something colorful on it to be the subject? This is just what I would think/do, it's not necessarily what is "right." Hope you enjoy taking many more photos in the future!
