Default Staging and Food Photography

I am just getting into photography and am loving this site. I was reading up on how to take better pictures of food, because, let's face it, nothing is better than the stuff! Currently I have a point and shoot, and it looks like that is all I will be using for a while. I have a hard time staging the food while making it look "natural", and I would also like suggestions on backgrounds and lighting tricks to better display the food. But really any help is welcome!!! So thanks in advance!!!

I like the perspective created by the 2.8 dof. You have in sharp focus what is important and enough focus of the remainder to keep the points of interest. You've done well with what you have imo. Just google 'tips for photographing food'and I'm sure you'll have a mountain of information. And do a search here on DPS as well. The only thing is the background seems a little blown out. Nice work!

Thank you for the background tip! I will work on finding the right balance between having the foreground light enough while the background is not super white. =)

Overall this was a good start, for me the lighting was fine....

for the composition, the crop is so tight, In my view it will be better in horizontal orientation to give some space.

the positioning of subject is a little bit awkward, for me I prefer to place the first subject after the second one, because even if you blurred it, it is too big to be infront, and the viewers eye will have the tendency to back and forth to the first and second subject (no resting point).

maybe you can use soft texture and background to pop up the food.

for more food photography shots and ideas, you can visit this flickr group.
