Default Not sure what it is.....

Something about this photo keeps drawing me in. Hubby and boys were fishing last night and I was so boooored. So I started walking around taking pics. This one, I don't know. I just keep coming back to it. I like it a lot but I am not sure why. What are you thoughts on this photo? Maybe it is the composure/framing, the distressed look of the scene. I don't know. TIA

Aperture f/5.0
Focal Length 123 mm
ISO Speed 800
I just wanted to add that my settings are a little weird because I was in the middle of shooting some wildlife. I obviously could have went with a slower shutter, but I was being lazy.

I sometimes get photos' like this that do "something" for me, and which no-one else seems to get.. I think if the background was more out of focus it would be a much better shot, but as is I find it distracting.. Maybe it's the rebel in you, reading the kepp off, but you just know you wanna go out on that dock!

NicoleScraps,

First of all, great image. I'm actually really drawn to this one as well. I really enjoy the way this shots composed. The main subject is slightly off to the side, making it a little more interesting than if it was dead center.

While I can see why BuddhaPi says that the background should be more out of focus, I personally like it the way it is. Being able to see the boat behind this sign saying "Please Keep Off Dock" adds a little bit more story to it. Now like I said, that's just me though.

I do think that the distressed look of this scene is what really makes it though. If this was a brand new sign hanging there, it wouldn't be anywhere near as interesting.

So overall, great image and I can definitely see why you like it. I look forward to seeing more of your work.

David

I think it's a nice shoot, but I have to agree with Buddha Pi-- throwing the background out of focus would make it a great shot.

You never know what works sometimes. I like this shot as well. It's nicely composed, tells a story and has limited colours. Even without a more out of focus background the sign still pops and the image shows depth. It may not be everyone's cup of tea, just remember what Churchill said
