I'm certainly no photography expert so this is just my opinion
the photo is composed nicely, pleasing to the eye, but I find having those 3 components just mashed up together in a pile not really eye catching or appealing. maybe if i was doing this assignment I would play with the 3 elements a bit more, rather than having it in a pile... lay it out in some creative way? e.g. a rock, paper and scissors in a row? take that in an angle. or play with depth of field a bit more to focus on one of the 3 elements. or hang things off a string? sorry for the random ideas, I have no idea whether any of them would actually work but i think you'll have fun experimenting with having it not in a pile. let us know your results! cheers! |

Thank you very much for your critique, you pretty much confirmed what I had thought, that the composition was uninteresting as it stands. I have tried different angles but they all came out pretty much the same. I have an antique singer sewing machine maybe I can do something with a paper dress making pattern and scissors with that. Never short on ideas. lol

If I'm given the same topic, I would not just take a pics of paper, scissors and stone, because even you arrange it perfectly giving a nice depth of field without any story convey, its nothing and doesn't attract the viewers.
I going to wrap the stone with the papers and tight it with the strings, then hang it..position one person below the wrap stone (be careful it might fall down) the person below the stone is holding a scissors, trying to cut the strings..in that way, you have some humor in your photo. ( I hope so )also, do you know the paper, scissors, stone game, let some kids to play it and shoot candidly. just an idea, hope it helps...

There's a couple things that don't work for me in this image. One, you've got rock, paper, scissors, and twine. Obviously, the twine tied up the paper, and you'd need the scissors to cut the twine, but it's an added element that isn't necessary, IMHO.
The other thing is, this doesn't convey anything to me. There's no story or meaning behind what these items are doing together, unless I know you've shot it for the assignment. For a couple of different ideas, if you could find a coupon for something with the word "rock" in it, and take a picture of that coupon being cut out, you've got rock, paper, and scissors and a story element. The idea of shooting a game of RPS is good, although for a different spin on composition, I'd try lying on the ground below the players and shooting up at them as they throw. |

I really like the timber deck, and the stack of papers. The grain of the timber is echoed in the layers of paper. The front page picture is a bit distracting for me though. One thing is I would try to get some nicer looking string and scissors. And the rock seems out of place in this picture.

How about this:
Rock shatters Scissors Scissors cut Paper Paper covers Rock Why not literally shoot these images? Broken scissors laying "defeated" beside a rock Scissors cutting paper and Paper wrapped around a rock.
