Default Hibiscus

Shot this hibiscus outside of my girlfriend's house today. I can't believe I never thought of shooting it before.

Anyways, how is the composition, DOF, exposure? Tell me what you think.
Also, do you think there is too much negative space?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Tyler,

Don't fret. I believe that this "Other" section just doesn't get as much visitation as the other topic sections.

I really like the soft color tones in the flower here. A lot of cameras over saturate reds and so I think this peach color is ideal for attractiveness without being overblown. The background bokeh is nice but I think we see a little too much of it. In particular, the light green patch on the left could be cropped out entirely with less attention drawn from the flower.

I'm a bit torn on how the flower is lit. On one hand the bright highlights around the right petals create some contrast and interest but I can also tell that the flower is nearly backlit because the petals are casting slight shadows on themselves in some places. A slight change in the time of day could create some other interesting light patterns to experiment with. It doesn't really bother me though.

There's a bright leaf in the top right that you could easily burn in post-processing or crop. Also, the focus seems to be a bit in front of the stamen, on the closest petals rather than the center of the flower where my eye wants to see sharpness. I think just shifting a tiny fraction towards the center of the flower on your focus would look good there.

Overall, it's a very pleasant picture.

Thank you for all of the great advice. With it, I will help to better my knowledge in photography

Thanks again.

I really like the colours and the flower is a beautiful subject.

For me, I'd like to see the depth of field cover the whole flower. The outer petals kind of tend to start to blend with the background. And I do find some of the lines (if you can even call them that) in the background close to the flower distract me.

But that is all just personal opinion, and as we know, that changes for everyone.
