Default My Freind Frank

Ok, before start let me just say that I know there really is no creativity in this shot. I mean, come on..it's a skull. I didn't even bother putting a flower in there or anything. And it's pretty much dead center...how bland can ya get?

The point of this shot for me was to put into practice some of what I know about lighting, see how far I can get with a work lamp and start to figure out what I will need to do, get or build to move things along to the next level.

This was shot with one lamp head sidelighting Frank on a slight angle and the other bouncing off the ceiling. The lights are quite strong and I have no way to vary the power so I can see I'll need to figure out some way to diffuse them without setting the house on fire as well as get something else to to diffuse the shadow on the other side.

Any other tips y'all have?

Camera Canon EOS 550D
Exposure 0.02 sec (1/50)
Aperture f/4.5
Focal Length 37 mm

In my honest opinion, yes it was a neat shot but it looks flat to me, in this shot you said that lightings is your main purpose, as with my understanding, lighting effects is somewhat creating a nice shadows that makes your image dimensional and we appreciate those shadows in a well lit environment. The background that you used is very dark, yes you create some shadows but it doesn't help to your image because there is no much contrast. This image appear as light painted only.

fair enough. I actually came back later and shot it again wit some added elements to provide more of a tonal contrast. Flower, candle etc. Still not too happy with the results but I am working on it.

I think I may head out today and find myself a nice sheet of muslin or something to use as a backdrop.
