Default An Image from a Rally

I was doing my usual Saturday afternoon walk around and happened upon a small rally/protest taking place in front of the White House. I switched to my old Tamron 28-200 Lens (dated but still pretty sharp and my only piece of glass with reach) and tried to get some tight shots of the people and elements taking part in the Rally.

Please critique these from the eye of photojournalist - what could I do composition, exposure, subject, and focal point wise to improve the general presentation and expression of a protest or rally.

The lead image I have chosen is representative of a smaller section of the rally, but is a poignant capture that identifies that particular group and the message who they were reaching out to.

The rest of the set can be found here; White House Protest. This is obviously a lot of images to ask for critiques of but any extra viewing and comments to how they cover the event as a whole would be appreciated.

Note: Please keep the responses A-Political (first real DPS Post so don't know if this is necessary?), try to respond to the images themselves and not necessarily the message it's subjects are attempting to portray.

Its a really neat concept. However, in terms of photojournalism, there isnt enough here telling the story. The Libyan flag over the white house is quite a powerful statement, but what about all the angry people? I wish you left your 50mm lens (or whatever you had on before!) and captured the entire scene, to really grab the emotion from the protest.

You were titled this "An image from a rally", without looking on the photograph, i expect that there was a number of people with banners parading on the street, but upon looking on your photo, i saw a Libyan flag... from the image itself i don't feel that there is a rally.

Thumbs up

I completely understand both of your comments.

I guess I should have chosen a different photo from the set and/or a different title for the thread.

I know the rules state 1 photo per thread, any objections to me swapping it out?

Round 2

Nikon D50 with a Tamron 28-200mm
1/320 @ f/5.6, 200mm

Obvious concerns of mine: Missed the focus and sun flare on the left.

I was maxing out the focal length and aperture of my lens at this point, would it be better to train myself to focus Manually in these situations? The busy frame and harsh lighting conditions appears as though it was a bit taxing for my set up.

I kind of look at this one like "aaahhh it's almost a good one but blah"

Edit: General question to add as well, what's the policy/practice of posting a pic of someone's mug while they're being arrested?

For me, the second photo is much appropriate for the title "An Image from Rally"...for this picture, I am not much concern with the technicality but with the feeling you are trying to portray since you want a photojournalism, and you got it. The little blurriness on the man who is caught, i think add an effect and suggested that there is motion, he is trying to escape from the policemen. For the policy, i really dont know, i was here in Saudi arabia, where photography especially this type is strongly prohibited., Hope I help with my little ideas, i'm still learning too.
