Material World: Sculpture to Environment - Mass MoCACanon 5D
Sears Auto 55mm f/1.4 (M42)
ISO 400
1/30
f/1.4

Recently visited Mass MoCA and took a few photos. This particular installation is made of miles of braided rope; I wanted to show the fine detail of the rope, the overall scale of the installation (without resorting to the standard wide angle shot of the entire sprawling sculpture), and its general presence (the flow of the piece, how the material contributes to that, how it is installed "bursting" through the wall).

As you can see it was pretty dark, this was actually pushed about another 1/2 stop or so in post. DOF with this lens at 1.4 is extremely shallow, and as it's only single-coated contrast is fairly low.

Let me know if this works.

May also be helpful to view the large size.

I love this picture. I love the color and I love how even though the subject is blurred in the back it still adds so much texture to the photo. Nice job!

Thanks, I definitely appreciate the kind words, but if you think there is anything that could be improved let me know!

The photo feels cut off on the left side. I am not getting the picture that this a very long braided rope. Do you have more shots from other angles perhaps. Color and detail is good

That's helpful, I am usually keeping things out of the frame as a way of not being overly literal and giving the viewer a chance to complete the image in a way. Sometimes I go a bit too far though. Thanks for the help.
