I really like the "idea" of this pic, but don't know how to set it up. My daughter got a keyboard for Christmas and I thought this would make a good shot. I see noticeable falloff in clarity/focus/color in this pic. Do you think it is a lens quality issue, DOF issue, or human error issue. What could I have done to make this image better in you honest opinion.

Like you, I have a lot of photos in my head that are great in the idea stage, but not so great when I finally see the image. One thing I noticed is that this is shot from pretty much straight on. I usually don't like most of my photos that I shoot this way. If I go back and reshoot them from an unusual perspective or vantage point I usually like the results a lot better. Maybe just find a different angle to make the composition and subject matter a little more exciting. As for the technical aspects, I'm definitely still a newcomer to photography, so I usually just find myself experimenting until I get the look I want.

Closing down the aperture and dropping the ISO down would improve overall quality of the image. Experimenting with different angles and heights for your lens would probably add some visual interest.

Try getting a bit lower and a slight angle to the photo it looks to straight on (as already mentioned) and taken from above. Also try avoid using the onboard flash if you can it would look alot better in natural light.

Regards.
