Default I know I missed the mark but how do I get it right next time

So I saw this scooter left behind on the nature trail and thought I could get a good photo out of it. I added sepia filter to it but its still just blah. I feel like there was some potential here but I missed it. What would you have done?

Not sure whatelse isn't working, but had you not said that you saw a scooter I may not have seen it. The only part of it that is distinct is the handle bar. The rest just blends in to the leaf litter. Maybe a closer perspective with the scooter as an obvious focal point.

It looks pretty flat, like there's not much difference between the highlights and the shadows. You could probably play with the curves/levels when converting the original.

Any chance you could post an original image and the related EXIF data?

I probably would've moved in really close and really made the scooter my main subject. As it is, the scooter is so small in the frame that I couldn't really identify what it was without reading your description.

My 2 cents.

I cropped the photo to remove distractions and then placed the main subject at a point that gives it emphasis. My idea for the background is to create a sense of balance.

i agree with LoveDSLR that a crop would help. I chose the other direction electing to keep the road...

What EXIF data are you looking for?
I just used the auto mode with the light setting on cloudy (because it was)

If you open your photo and right click on the image, scroll down to "properties" and when the box opens click on Details you will find your EXIF Data there. Things such as your ISO speed, focal length, aperature/shutter settings, etc.

The first post I ever put here I had no clue how to find that stuff

My 2 cents. Get a lower angle next time it'll give you a good perspective on the scooter and the canopy

I went with a crop similar to what zona did. I tried a few Lightroom sepia presets, but didn't really care for them and went with a higher contrast B&W instead. I also agree with ctcook that a lower angle and maybe a wider angle up closer to the scooter would bring it out as a subject.
