Default Distortion

Took this photo of my guitar distortion fx pedal. I would like to know what people think of the composition and the post processing?

Post Processing in GIMP - I converted to black and white using the channel mixer, added a gradient overlay to bring focus onto the pedal, increased contrast, added some grain and sharpened.

EXIF:
Camera : Canon 1000D
Lens : Canon 50mm 1.8
Exposure Time: 1/50 sec
Aperture Value: 2.00 EV (f/2.0)
ISO Speed Rating: 640
Exposure Programme: Aperture priority

Guitar FX Pedal

Regards

Ok, here's my take, but please keep in mind I'm still learning too :-)

I like the curve you've got in the cables, especially as it makes the eye follow through, but the dark right hand side means the eye is drawn to the pedal itself. However I find the DOF a little too shallow, or the focus in the wrong spot, depending on how you want to think of it because the knobs are all blurry. Oh, I just read your post again, so it was all in focus originally? In that case, just ease off the gradient overlay a little to avoid blurring the knobs.

I'm not entirely sure what you wanted to achieve with this photo. It doesn't really hold my attention, though maybe it would mean something to someone that has an interest in amplifiers and electrical guitars?

It seems like the image needs to be rotated counterclockwise a bit. I'd ease up on the grain. The DOF seems off to me, like more of the pedal should be out of focus, or more of the wood above the pedal and some of the cord on the right should be in focus. I can't quite put my finger on it.

That being said, I think the composition is good the curve in the cord is great

p.s. Your Flickr photostream is amazing, what great opportunities

I think it's pretty good as is. I don't have a problem with the DoF.. in fact, i think it's quite good.

I have just two issues.
1. It seems a bit flat, can you try to boost the contrast a bit. Maybe it's because the pedal is grey and the floor brown which are not great for contrasty images.

2. Also, hate the watermark being in the middle of the point of interest. Should be elsewhere in my opinion.
