Default Shaped bokeh

Hi, I've been wanting to experiment with shaped bokeh for a while, and now that the christmas trees are up I did some tests. I'd like some critiques to this shot and also some tips like how to get the background really out of focus to get the shapes back there.

On this shot I made things out of focus and got the bokeh. I tried a shot with something on the foreground but the shapes on the tree became really small and almost impossible ot notice.

The settings for this shot:

Camera Canon EOS Digital Rebel XS
Exposure 0.077 sec (1/13)
Aperture f/1.8
Focal Length 50 mm
ISO Speed 800

Thank you!!!

I like this image, especially in the Holiday Season context. For bokeh, you're on the right track with wide aperture like f/1.8 at 50 mm. If you move your subject further away from the background, obviously that is more effective as is a lens that will go even lower in f/number.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help, but I wanted to make some comment because I liked the image so much.
